Operation Absolute Resolve
U.S. military raid in Caracas, Venezuela to capture President Maduro, involving 200+ special operations forces, 150+ aircraft, and kinetic fire. Became the flashpoint that escalated the Anthropic-Pentagon dispute.
On January 3, 2026, the United States launched Operation Absolute Resolve, a large-scale military operation in Caracas, Venezuela to capture President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.
Scale of the Operation
- More than 200 U.S. special operations forces participated
- More than 150 aircraft launched from 20 bases across the Western Hemisphere
- The CIA had maintained a clandestine ground team in Venezuela since August 2025
- The operation involved kinetic fire — combat with casualties
- Maduro and Cilia Flores were captured
Significance to the AI Dispute
The raid’s connection to the Anthropic-Pentagon dispute was indirect but pivotal. After the operation, an Anthropic executive contacted Palantir to ask whether Claude had been used in the raid. This inquiry — raised in a way that suggested potential concern about AI involvement in a combat operation — became a key escalation point.
The Pentagon interpreted the inquiry as Anthropic potentially disapproving of its technology being used in operations involving kinetic fire, further hardening the administration’s stance against the company.
