Al Udeid Air Base is located approximately 35 km southwest of Doha, Qatar. It serves as the forward headquarters for US Central Command (CENTCOM) and hosts the Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC) — the nerve center that coordinates all US and coalition air operations across the Middle East, Central Asia, and East Africa.

Force structure: Al Udeid hosts approximately 10,000 US military personnel under normal conditions, along with elements of the US Air Force’s 379th Air Expeditionary Wing. The base operates KC-135 tankers, C-17 transport aircraft, RQ-4 Global Hawk surveillance drones, and has hosted B-52 bomber deployments. The CAOC facility manages real-time airspace deconfliction, targeting, and battle damage assessment for the entire theater of operations.

Strategic importance: Al Udeid is irreplaceable in the current operational architecture. The CAOC cannot be easily relocated — it requires hardened communications infrastructure, satellite uplinks, and secure network connections that took years to build. Loss or significant degradation of Al Udeid would cripple US command-and-control capability for ongoing operations against Iran.

Current status: Al Udeid has been confirmed struck by Iranian ballistic missiles during the current conflict. Qatar has intercepted the majority of inbound threats (13 of 14 ballistic missiles and 4 drones in a single March 5 salvo), but at least one missile impact has been confirmed on base. The base represents the highest-value US military target within Iranian missile range and is under continuous threat from IRGC ballistic missile forces.
