Boris Cherny
Head and creator of Claude Code at Anthropic (previously at Meta). Under his direction, Claude Code launched in May 2025 and reached $1B ARR by November 2025. His personal testimony — shipped 22 PRs one day, 27 the next, all 100% AI-written, hasn't made a manual code edit in months — is the most striking data point in the dark factory story.
Boris Cherny is the Head and creator of Claude Code at Anthropic. He was previously at Meta.
His personal testimony, published in Fortune (January 2026):
“100% of my code is now written by Claude Code. I haven’t made a manual code edit in over two months.”
On a single day he shipped 22 pull requests. The next day, 27. Every line written by the agent. He was directing, not coding.
Claude Code’s Self-Writing
The 90% figure for Claude Code’s own codebase is significant because it closes the recursion: the most widely-used coding agent was built by the most widely-used coding agent. This isn’t a demo or internal prototype — it’s a commercially deployed product that hit $1B ARR in six months, and 90% of it was written by itself.
Anthropic company-wide: an Anthropic spokesperson put the figure at “between 70% and 90%” of code being AI-written.
Lenny Rachitsky (citing Anthropic CPO Mike Krieger): “the bottleneck has moved from coding to upstream alignment and downstream evaluation.”
